Unit 1: My Weekends

My weekends are generally safe, boring, and quite simple. I wake up early like a chicken. That is why I work for “The German Bakery”. At work, of course I bake many kinds of bread, but I also sell them, too. Since there are very few customers, usually the shop does not make good sales, so I can not call it fun. After work, it is usually almost noon, so I have a light lunch, something like doughnuts and milk, or just some onigiri (rice balls). Then I return home and clean my room using my new vacuum cleaner. It is very nice and makes it easy for me to clean. After that I usually do not have any special to do. Sometimes I surf the net, go to Sogawa for browsing some clothing shops, and have a great dinner. So that is my general weekend. Last weekend, I went work and had two cups of coffee because I was really sleepy and I could not do anything at the beginning of work. Thanks to the caffeine, I could finish work with no problem. From 12:00, I went to karaoke with my friend and hung out with them till 7:00, and after that we ate dinner. When I got home, I returned to my normal routine by taking a shower and going to bed. Next weekend, I will go driving to a beach with my guitar and will play the guitar all day.

Unit 2: My Friend, Shinji

Shinji Nagai has been my friend since primary school, and he is one of my best friends. Shinji is a handsome guy. He is six feet, two inches tall. His eyes are dark brown, and his face is thin. His hair is short, black, and straight. Shinji has a grateful personality. He has a strong confidence in himself. He has integrity and generally says what he thinks. He is also funny, too. He tells jokes a lot.

Shinji is eager at skiing, and now he is in a ski club at his university. He loves to ski and he is good at it because he was even selected for a prefectual team in Toyama from primary student and till goes to a university. He goes to Meiji-uni so he is far away from here, Toyama. When we was jr high school students, we had fun. I remember Shinji like to play other sports, such as football and basket ball. He also love to play some fighting games, especially the one called “Marvel vs Capcon” was his favorite. All of these things and memory make Shinji a very interesting person.

Shinji hopes to become a pro-skier or the instructor, and he is trying to be better skier so he said to me before that he will go to Canada to improve his ski skill this winter. I know he will be successful because he must practises and works hard now. He has a bright future, too.

Unit 5

The First day with my new Camera

Today was a fun and memorable day for Suguru and his new camera.

Suguru bought the black camera from the shop on the net. He believed he had made a nice choice. Before he had decided to buy it, he asked his friend who really know about the best cameras to buy, and also he looked around and compared a lot of cameras on the Internet.

Before Suguru has got his own camera, he used to take pictures on his cell phone. Sadly, since the camera on cell phone was a quite cheap, he couldn’t expect to get any high quality pictures. Suguru wasn’t really interested in photographs, but he thought it was fine to have a camera for his trips and parties he would have. Another reason he decided to buy it was that he loved high technological gadgets. He was excited and felt he was going to take a lot of pictures when he opened the brand-new-box.

At 8:00, Suguru got out of his bed a bit earlier than usual on a Sunday morning and he turned in the TV on to hear the news. As for breakfast, he had a cup of coffee with milk and some cakes on a plate. He had milk most every day, and when he had more time, he sometimes had a small bowl of rice with miso soup. He also liked bread with butter, jelly, or peanut butter. He showered and got dressed in his casual clothes and went to his room again to check his email. After a few minutes, he found that today was a quite beautiful day. He saw a light from outside through the window. His windows were covered with brown curtains. As he felt he had to go outside and take pictures using his new camera, he decided to go a park around the city with his bicycle to test if his camera worked well. When he arrived in the park, his friend Yuki was skateboarding there. He asked to Suguru if he could checkout his new camera. “Hey you’ve got a nice camera. Why dont you take some photos while I’m boarding?” he asked. Suguru took a lot of pictures of nature, buildings, and people including Yuki. The camera worked really well in the sunshine and inside buildings or in the shade. Suguru was happy about that and had a great time that day.

Suguru’s first day with his camera was great and interesting. He was a bit nervous about dropping it, but if he used a shoulder strap, it would be safe. When he didn’t understand how to use a feature, he read the handbook when he got to home. He felt he wanted to be a good photographer as soon as possible.

Unit 7

The event that has changed my life the most is reading the book called “Alice in Wonderland”. I read the book when I was a 6th grade student, and it allowed to me to touch a world of literature, perhaps of English itself. I am studying English now and I love the language a lot thanks to “Alice in Wonderland”. The book is built in with a really easy-to-understand story and the creativity of Lewis Carroll. I love this story.

Before I read the book, I was a kid who liked activities such as playing football or racing with my friends outside. I was really impatient, and I couldn’t sit in the same chair for more than 30 minutes without doing some funny, stupid stuff. Reading books was a joke to me. I am sure I read many kids books with cute illustrations and predictable endings, but they were a bit lame to me. My elementary school had a reading session every single weekday before 1st period, and my teacher encouraged us to read books every day. But to me, it felt like I was being forced to read. The reading session started from the 6th grade, and on the first day, I thought it would be really boring and spoil my precious morning time which was the time I had used to play with my friends outside. However, I had nothing to do but accept what my teacher suggested for me because all of the other children, including my football mates, were reading their books. The classroom was really silent with everyone reading, so I just followed them by reading Alice’s adventure.

It was a surprisingly interesting fantasy. The book I read was translated into easy Japanese for kids, though. The story seduced my heart, and I didn’t feel it was lame like all the books I had read. I totally loved the story and the interesting characters in it. The first day of the reading, although there was only 20 minutes for reading class, I kept reading more than 30 minutes so easily! That’s because of I remember that I skipped my next social life class so that I could continue reading the tale. I finished reading “Alice” in 2 days, and was really wondering if it wasn’t a Japanese story because the author name was Lewis Carroll. I thought,  “it must be a totally gaijin (non-Japanese) name!!” and got a English version at a book store. My English was really lame at that time when I was an elementary schoolchild, but it was not a big point to read Alice in English; at least I had learned about the fantasy in Japanese. When I finished reading the book, I found an interest in English and the differences between Japanese and English. I have learned to have fun with English, the language I’m currently studying.
